Dominican Republic digital nomad visa: requirements (2026)

Digital nomad visa in Dominican Republic: via other route.

The Dominican Republic has no dedicated digital nomad visa as of May 2026; a 2024 legislative proposal for e-visas covering remote workers remained under review and had not been enacted. Remote workers can nonetheless establish legal long-term residency via the Rentista (passive income ≥ US$2,000/month), Pensionado (pension ≥ US$1,500/month), or Investor (≥ US$200,000 invested locally) routes, all of which grant immediate permanent residence under Law 171-07 with significant tax incentives on foreign-sourced income.

Legal framework

Immigration Law No. 285-04 and Immigration Regulation No. 631-11 (administered by Dirección General de Migración), supplemented by Law 171-07 on Special Incentives for Foreign Retirees and Passive Investors

Key points: digital nomad & residency in Dominican Republic

  1. No dedicated digital nomad visa

As of May 2026 the Dominican Republic has not enacted a specific digital nomad or remote-work visa. A 2024 Senate proposal (referencing draft Law 875-78 on Visas) called for e-visas and tailored privileges for digital nomads, but remained in committee review with no confirmed passage.

  2. Rentista (Rentier) residency route

Foreigners proving a minimum monthly passive income of US$2,000 from a foreign company or institution qualify for Residence by Investment as a Renter (RT category). Income must be passive (investments, dividends, rental yields, bank deposits), active freelance/remote-work income does not qualify. Approval grants immediate permanent residence, renewable annually.

  3. Pensionado residency route

Retirees receiving a government or private pension of at least US$1,500/month (plus US$250 per dependent) qualify for the Pensionado residency category, also granting immediate permanent residence under Law 171-07.

  4. Investor residency route

Foreign nationals who invest a minimum of US$200,000 in the Dominican Republic qualify for Investor Residence (permanent). A fast-track processing window of approximately 45 business days applies to all three Law 171-07 categories (Pensionado, Rentista, Investor).

  5. Law 171-07 tax incentives

Beneficiaries of the Pensionado and Rentista categories receive a permanent exemption from Dominican income tax on all foreign-sourced income, exemption from import duties on personal/household goods, a 50% reduction in property tax and mortgage registration fees, and exemption from taxes on dividends and interest earned abroad.

  6. Tourist entry and short-stay options

Most nationalities may enter visa-free for 30 days (extendable within the country for up to 120 days total). There is no formal short-stay remote-work endorsement; staying beyond the tourist period without a residency permit is irregular. The Ordinary Temporary Residence (RT-9) provides a general one-year temporary residence permit outside the Law 171-07 fast-track categories.

Timeline of decisions

  1. Decision · official
DGM Extends Passport-Validity Waiver for Tourist Entry Through End of 2026

The DGM renewed a facilitation measure allowing citizens of the US, EU, UK, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Ecuador to enter on passports valid only for the duration of their stay, waiving the standard six-month rule. Running until 31 December 2026, the policy supports tourism and eases short-stay entry for potential remote workers — without creating any new residency rights.

Law 285-04 Marks 20th Anniversary; DGM Reaffirms Framework with No Digital Nomad Track

The DGM's 20th-anniversary review of Law 285-04 included a public transparency audit of residency processes and reaffirmation of its core categories. The review confirmed continued reliance on the 2004 statute with no dedicated digital nomad category introduced, crystallising the status quo for remote workers.

Senate Tourism Commission Tables E-Visa and Digital Nomad Visa Proposal

Senator Franklin Romero's proposal for electronic visas and a tailored digital nomad category with work-visa privileges was reported as under review by the Senate Tourism Commission. No legislation was enacted, confirming the Dominican Republic's persistent gap in purpose-built remote-worker pathways as of mid-2024.

Decree 631-11 Implementing Regulations for Law 285-04 Enter Into Effect

Decree 631-11 operationalised Law 285-04 with step-by-step procedures: applicants must first obtain a residence visa at a Dominican consulate abroad, then enter within 60 days and apply to the DGM in-country for a residence permit. This procedural framework — still fully in force — governs how every foreign national, including rentistas and investors, pursues Dominican residency.

Law 171-07 Creates Pensionado and Rentista Residency Tracks with Foreign-Income Tax Exemptions

Law 171-07 (Gaceta Oficial No. 10425, 19 July 2007) established two fast-track residency categories most relevant to location-independent earners: Pensionado (min. US$1,500/month pension) and Rentista (min. US$2,000/month passive or investment income from abroad). Both exempt qualifying foreign income from Dominican income tax, making these the closest the DR offers to a passive-income remote-worker pathway.

Law 158-01 (CONFOTUR) Launches Tourism Investment Incentive Scheme Underpinning Investor Residency

Law 158-01 established CONFOTUR, granting 15-year property-tax exemptions and transfer-tax waivers on approved tourism real-estate developments. Foreign buyers of CONFOTUR-approved properties meeting the US$200,000 minimum investment threshold can qualify for investor residency under the later Law 285-04 framework, making CONFOTUR the main real-estate-based residency bridge for affluent remote workers.
