Brazil digital nomad visa: requirements (2026)

Digital nomad visa in Brazil: dedicated visa.

Brazil operates a dedicated digital-nomad visa (VITEM XIV) in force since 2022, granting a temporary visa or residence authorization to foreigners without a labor tie in Brazil who work remotely for a foreign employer or client. It is issued for up to one year and renewable once for an additional year, subject to a US$1,500 monthly income or US$18,000 savings threshold. Beyond this pathway, Brazil also offers a residency-by-investment route (VIPER) via real estate and other long-stay categories such as the retirement (aposentado) and investor visas.

Legal framework

VITEM XIV visa and residence authorization for digital nomads, established by CNIg/MJSP Normative Resolution No. 45 of 9 September 2021 (published DOU 24 January 2022); administered by the Ministry of Justice & Public Security and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Itamaraty).

Key points: digital nomad & residency in Brazil

  1. Dedicated legal basis

CNIg Normative Resolution No. 45/2021 created the digital-nomad visa/residence permit for immigrants without a Brazilian employment link whose activity can be carried out remotely for a foreign employer, published in the Diário Oficial da União on 24 January 2022.

  2. Financial threshold

Applicants must show monthly income of at least US$1,500 from a foreign source, or available bank funds of at least US$18,000, plus a foreign employment/service contract and a self-declaration of remote-work capability.

  3. Duration & renewal

The VITEM XIV is granted for up to one year and can be renewed once for an equal period through the Federal Police from within Brazil, provided the income/savings threshold and no-Brazilian-employer condition are still met.

  4. Other documentation

Applicants also need a valid passport, private health insurance covering the stay in Brazil, and a criminal-background certificate; applications are lodged at a Brazilian consulate abroad via the e-consular (SERPRO) system or, in some cases, directly with the Federal Police in Brazil.

  5. Tax-residency trigger

Physical presence exceeding 183 days (consecutive or not) within any 12-month period makes the nomad a Brazilian tax resident, subjecting worldwide income to Brazilian personal income tax under the carnê-leão regime — a key planning point independent of the visa itself.

  6. Residency-by-investment (VIPER)

Alongside the nomad route, Brazil offers a golden-visa-style permanent residency via real-estate investment of at least R$1,000,000 (reduced to R$700,000 in the North and Northeast regions); other CNIg routes cover retirees with foreign pension income and business investors.
